What GEO changes in a practical SEO programme

Generative engine optimization is useful as a planning label, but it does not replace a crawlable website or useful content. Start with the information a buyer needs to make a decision.

Turn GEO into a concrete information-quality programme

For a software services company, the useful question is not simply whether a chatbot mentions the brand. It is whether a buyer can discover accurate, relevant evidence about the services, understand their limits and take a sensible next step. GEO work should improve that journey even when the visitor arrives through ordinary search or a direct referral.

Google's generative AI search guidance emphasizes useful, distinctive information and foundational SEO. It does not present an extra text file or a special schema label as a shortcut to inclusion. Start with pages a person would find worth reading, then make those pages accessible and internally connected.

Work in four measurable layers

A practical GEO work plan
LayerDeliverableEvidence to retain
AccessPublic, crawlable priority pagesResponses, indexing checks and linked URLs
UnderstandingClear service scope and consistent company factsVisible text matching structured data
EvidenceUseful examples and documented project outcomesMethod, context, limitations and permission to publish
MeasurementStable buyer-question tests and referral reportsDated observations and qualified enquiries

Keep implementation records for each layer. A crawler being allowed does not prove that it visited; a visit does not prove indexing; an index entry does not prove an AI citation. Reporting those stages separately prevents progress from being exaggerated.

Worked example: helping a buyer evaluate an AI agency

Imagine a buyer asking how to choose a partner for an internal knowledge assistant. A page that repeats “best AI company” gives the buyer very little to evaluate. A stronger page explains what documents are needed, how access permissions are preserved, how answers are tested, who approves a pilot and what happens when the assistant cannot answer.

Add an illustrative evaluation worksheet with questions the buyer can use with any supplier. Where real results are available, publish the starting conditions, measurement period and limitations with the client's approval. Where they are unavailable, label the example hypothetical. An honest explanation of a difficult delivery decision is more useful than an invented percentage improvement.

Use clear section headings and answer the main question near the beginning. Keep qualifications next to the claims they limit. If a paragraph says a workflow is suitable only for reviewed drafts, do not move that restriction into a distant disclaimer. A reader extracting one section should still understand the boundary.

Measure visibility without treating one answer as a ranking

Create a small test set covering discovery, comparison, implementation and vendor evaluation. Save the exact question, platform, date, language and market context. Record whether the answer mentions MAUKAZ, links to a page and describes the company accurately. Repeat under comparable conditions; generated answers can vary, so a single appearance is an observation rather than a durable position.

Compare this record with observed referral visits and contact intent. A direct visit may have been influenced by an AI answer without a trackable referral. Conversely, a citation may produce no visit. Keep these uncertainties visible and ask new enquiries how they found the business when appropriate.

For implementation, follow company-fact consistency, evidence-page design and AI visibility testing. Review usefulness and factual accuracy before increasing publication volume.

A practical starting point

Work through these checks in order. Use the results to decide what needs to change in your own workflow.

  1. Audit whether important pages are discoverable and accurately describe the business.
  2. Identify questions that require specific evidence, examples or trade-offs.
  3. Measure relevant visibility and qualified visits without promising inclusion in generated answers.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE

A clear implementation comparison can help both a human researcher and a system retrieving supporting material.

A mistake to avoid

Do not sell a special file or schema type as a guaranteed route into AI answers.

How to check progress

Keep a dated sample of queries and record citations separately from actual referral visits.

Your action checklist

Use this checklist while reviewing your own setup. Checkmarks are temporary and stay in this open page.
